Monobloc

Ps  a little preamble required here  -this was really meant to go up three days ago from my phone but only uploaded today

I had to meet someone yesterday and I suggested the cafe at LCGA without realising there was a new show ( the invite to it arrived at home yesterday while I was out.) Have a look:

This is from an exhibition of work by Michael Warren called 'Those who go/ those who stay ' and that is the name of this particular piece:

I didn't have a lot of time so it was only a very quick look - will have to go back again. Some more:

Her Hair

Bio-dynamics

There was also a quote from Umberto Boccioni - Futurist:

For deceptive simplicity of conception and execution Michael Warrens work has always been difficult to surpass .

Just go and look and absorb

The Serigraphic Path

Today was a day of contrasts - started out feeling fairly crummy and nearly returned home from station and indeed worked all day with a film of sweat on forehead.

That was the bad bit - the good bit was that the screen just got better all day; I wish I had taken more pics but it is a bit messy to try that during screen-printing -at least at my stage -but I have some images from the last stages and I will put them up:

This was the original image -the collage which became a digital print and now a screenprint
(this one is missing a few worms though)

An early four colour version - pity about the leak spot

Next stage -three more colours

Corrective measures on MRPVC

Final print  nine colours

In operation

all in all a very satisfactory print day - I have learnt a lot about screen-printing and about bitmapping in P/S as well - great

On a Clear Day

Its Monday morning on the train from Limerick  Junction and there is hardly a cloud in the sky as it slowly lights up  - cold, and slipped on the bridge in Thurles station.

Thinking further about how the screenprint is going  and I should have taken more photos during the process - it was a bit hectic though - not entirely happy - had a leak at the edge and I didn't know how to properly counteract it  - I know now thanks to Pam.

Eoin B is right  - have to go at it again until I do a perfect edition.

I took some pictures around Limerick which have given me ideas for a new print.

Don't ask.

I have opened  a file called Façade Edge and I hope that this is going to be the genesis of the self-directed brief. Just a few examples:

 - be back with screen shots

The Path of Cogitation

Here are a few pics just to bring things up to date a little.

Last year I was always changing the wall - this year we didn't really have time but her is the wall as it was presented for assessment -litho was in front of desk.

There don't seem to have been quite as many openings and new shows but again that might have had something to do with lack of time; I walked through Limerick the other day, though and I saw this:

Is this something to do with the cities new(disputed?) status ? ...... culture and so on.

Still more interesting ground art everywhere:

and on that subject there may shortly be a lot more to say  - just think books and art.

Speaking of art  -on the walls of school  -I believe these come from 4th year

I like this

I really like this

What wonderful drawing skill and insight

Ah well we can aspire ..... and congratulations to first years for a brilliant show (feel a bit depressed after it though  - still onwards and upwards

The Monochrome Path

One of last semesters projects was to produce six black and white (b/w) A4 prints from shooting through development to printing in the darkroom. I was very taken with this and did a series in people drinking coffee - people I knew and people in the street.

Anyway Boots were selling off b/w film cheaply so I invested, only to discover that there are serious differences  between b/w films and what I had got required a 'colour process' (b/w??) and that I could not use this in the school photo lab.

However I proceeded with the latest roll and got some interesting shots. Here is a selection bearing in mind that thee have been scanned in from  6x4 prints so apologies for the quality of some:

This is an enigma for the viewer

again, the familiar made unfamiliar

this one should have gone in with the coffee drinkers

post recession Ireland  -this is the other side of the gloss -the view from the car park of the Whitewater Shopping Centre in Newbridge

IMMA

Homage a Brancusi

LJ

the glass coffins of HSQ

Both of HSQ

Untitled

Another interesting thing that I learnt when buying some film from Bob is that this film - CN - is very good for scanning from negatives so I am going to try that out too .

Meanwhile another roll has started and these will be for my development - ambiguous!!??

By the way here are the two different films:

The Colour Path

I already drew your attention to the petrol station on the way to the railway but as the sunlight was so good yesterday I took a few more shots

I thought this was part of the city of culture thing but apparently not - maybe there is an enlightened view as to how a city could look.....

Can't get away from this colour

Berlinde is beginning to take over my life

Test path

I have just been favoured with the installation of E-Fibre from Eircom and am testing how fast images upload so I will check back and see what I might have missed

First here a a few more books I acquired through gifts and returns over the last few weeks:

This is the book that accompanied the recent eponymous exhibition which was on in the Tate Britain; it got some very good reviews there being a definte reassessment of Lowry's position in British art. It is notable that one of the authors is T.J.Clark whose recent book on Picasso was reviewed by John Banville with the words 'if you read this you will never look at Picasso's paintings the same way again'. He (Clark)  is also the author of a book on Manet with the same title ie The Painting of Modern Life which is really worth reading for its close analysis of that period (fin-de-siècle) and Manet's work.

This is a small but beautifully illustrated book on Kiefer whose work is exerting a steadily growing influence on my thinking.

I picked this up on my visit to IMMA on the foot of reading one of Danto's essays as recommended by Kieran Cashell

This is of course in the library, but I spotted it at less than half-price in my favourite remainder bookshop and I had my rucksack so how could I resist......

Let's just nip back to Keele Strand in Achill and visit another small denizen who was spotted by the whale-watchers

Who he?

A slightly picturesque view of the beach:

Believe - that's true colour - no editing

Finally, it was said to me that this had a beautiful pour so this one is for you, Barry

Ps E-~Fibre is extraordinary - about ten times the speed of upload
